Trigger Point & Joint Injections Q & A

What is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point is a localized area of muscle spasm. You probably know of these points as muscle knots. You may be able to feel trigger points with your hand while massaging an area of muscle soreness, like your back and neck. These areas may be tender to the touch and radiate pain to nearby parts of your body.

You can develop trigger points in any muscle, but they’re especially common in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. People with medical conditions like fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome are especially prone to trigger points.

What are Trigger Point Injections?

The team at Health Atlast offers trigger point injections to relieve pain associated with trigger points. They spend time evaluating your condition so they can develop a trigger point injection treatment plan customized to your needs.

Trigger point injections usually contain a small amount of local anesthetic to numb the area, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, or a combination of both. Your provider at Health Atlast determines which is best for you and then injects a small amount of medicine into the trigger point.

Sometimes, they perform trigger point therapy without injecting a medication. This technique is called dry needling and it’s similar to acupuncture. The needle itself breaks up the muscle spasm.

What are Joint Injections?

If you suffer from joint pain due to an injury or arthritis, joint injections may be right for you. The team at Health Atlast offers a variety of joint injections to help you find relief from pain without unnecessary medications or surgery.

Depending on your needs, therapeutic joint injections may include:

  • Corticosteroid Injections: Steroid injections help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms and other types of joint pain, especially in the shoulders, knees, and hips. Corticosteroid injections reduce joint inflammation for 2-3 months.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP is a concentrated solution of growth factors derived from your own blood. Growth factors promote healing of soft tissues, including cartilage that’s damaged by osteoarthritis.
